PostgreSQL mcp_server
Query PostgreSQL safely from your agent — read-only by default, with schema exploration, table analysis and named multi-database access. 15 tools, 4 prompts, 4 resources. **Querying** — run SQL with read-only protection, EXPLAIN a plan, or write only when you have explicitly enabled it. **Schema** — list schemas, tables, views and functions; describe a table's columns, indexes and constraints; describe a view's definition. **Analysis** — table statistics (row count, size, bloat), column search by name across all tables, database and connection info. **Several databases at once.** Set `POSTGRES_CONNECTIONS` to a JSON array of named connections and every tool takes a `database` alias, so one server answers questions about staging and production without reconfiguring. Call `list_databases` first to see the aliases — credentials are never returned. For a single database, use the plain `POSTGRES_*` variables instead. **Safe by default.** Writes are off unless `ALLOW_WRITE_OPERATIONS` is set, result sets are capped by `MAX_ROWS`, and queries by `QUERY_TIMEOUT`. Speaks the `2026-07-28` protocol revision and is dual-era — clients that still open with the 2025-era handshake are served unchanged. A Python implementation with the identical tool set is available as `pipx install postgresql-mcp`.
